Salt & Pepper, located right on the waterfront in St Julian’s, was the very first restaurant we visited during our trip to Malta. To sum it up in one sentence: not only was it a truly positive experience, but it also set the tone for a series of delicious culinary adventures in this beautiful island nation.
Maybe the best part of the whole experience was the atmosphere and the view—it’s a place that’s worth visiting even if you just want to sit and relax. You’re dining on a charming terrace right next to the bay, basically between the seaside promenade and the water. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a table that faces the sea. Salt & Pepper in St Julian’s is one of those places that’s worth visiting for the vibe and view alone.

What We Ate
Maltese rabbit, or stuffat tal-fenek, is a must-try dish for nearly every tourist on the island, so of course we had to give it a shot. Like most restaurants here, it was served with green peas and oven-roasted potatoes. The rabbit stew—braised in garlic and red wine with just a bit of tomato—was incredibly flavorful. It was beautifully presented, and the flavors at Salt & Pepper St Julian’s totally delivered.

The Mediterranean salad featured another classic Maltese ingredient: octopus. It also included shrimp, prawns, avocado, and plenty of fresh vegetables. Compared to the rabbit, it was a completely different flavor profile—light, fresh, and vibrant—but just as delicious and perfect for a lighter lunch.

The only downside was that the portions were a bit small. Sure, the atmosphere and overall vibe made up for it, and the food was genuinely tasty, but the main course didn’t exactly fill me up. The rabbit, for example, was just one small leg—which felt a little skimpy for an average adult. Most places give you half a rabbit; here, they went a bit lighter than expected.
Overall, a Great Experience
All in all, Salt & Pepper St Julian’s was a great experience, and we’d definitely recommend it. If you care about ambiance, want a nice view, or are looking for a romantic dinner by the water, this is a great pick. The flavors were fantastic—just be prepared that one main course might not be quite enough if you’re really hungry.
