Burger King really shot itself in the foot when it opened a restaurant in a small mall near Tromsø Airport. They now operate the northernmost burger fast food restaurant in the world, yet they can’t really turn that into a tourist claim or any meaningful extra income.
McDonald’s, on the other hand, is able to make a big marketing fuss about their northernmost restaurant as that one is situated right in the heart of old town Tromsø where every tourist go. People visiting the Northern Lights capital of the world simply stop by to take a picture with the northern golden-arch poster, and that alone turns the restaurant into a tourist attraction. Mickey D’s have always been exceptional in marketing.

Compare this to Burger King. They also have one restaurant in Tromsø city center, which is actually slightly farther north than the famous McDonald’s branch. Just a corner away, but to the north. Yet they can’t claim anything about that restaurant as they opened another one even farther north in a local mall where they rarely get any tourists.

A Run-of-the-Mill Burger King in a Small Mall
We went ahead and tried the northernmost Burger King in the world, which, by the way, also has a drive-thru. It is situated in a small mall, right next to the airport. At first you might think it’s a convenient stop for tourists, but it’s actually not that close. You need some kind of transport to get there.

I figure many tourists in Tromsø are afraid of renting a car – which they shouldn’t, but that topic is for another article – so most of them have almost no chance of visiting this northernmost restaurant. And even if you rent a car, really there is nothing special to this place. Why would you come all the way out here when there are so many real wonders to experience in Tromsø?
We tried it, just for the sake of this article. It’s the same setting, the same ambience that you get at basically any Burger King in the world. We only saw local people here, which can be fun sometimes but it really wasn’t in this case. Apart from the snow outside and our intention of coming here, you couldn’t really tell that there’s anything special about this restaurant. Just a run-of-the-mill Burger King, which happens to sit even farther north above the Arctic Circle than any other Burger King in the world.

Where Is It Located?
The northernmost Burger King in the world is located just outside Tromsø Airport in Norway, inside a small mall, and it also has a drive-thru. If you prefer, you can also try their second-northernmost restaurant in the heart of Tromsø.
