Finding gluten free food in Copenhagen isn’t always easy. That’s why we were very happy to find H.U.G. Bageri, which has been our favorite gluten free bakery ever since.
H.U.G. is heaven on earth for anyone who avoids gluten. They always have a wide selection of fresh, organic homemade breads, pastries and other treats. And yes—just like the title says, it’s all gluten-free. H.U.G. actually stands for Helt Uden Gluten (“Completely Without Gluten”).
And here’s the best part: the gluten free baked goods in H.U.G. are genuinely good. You can absolutely enjoy them even if you normally eat gluten. There are other places in Copenhagen where you can buy gluten free-breads and pastries, but they don’t even come close. If you want gluten-free bread, pastries, and cakes in the Danish capital, this place is simply second to none.

H.U.G. Gluten Free Bakery is located in the Østerbro neighborhood in Copenhagen, not far from Nørreport, Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden, or the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst). It’s also within walking distance of Østerport station and The Little Mermaid—we actually did this walk the other day.
H.U.G. is a slightly outside the main touristy area, but it’s still an easy stop even if you’re spending only one day in Copenhagen.

The Selection
What we like the most is that all of their products are organic and gluten free (glutenfri in Danish), and they offer several different options:
- They have vegan treats (vegansk in Danish), which obviously don’t contain eggs or milk. So even if you’re not vegan specifically, these baked goods are suitable for anyone avoiding milk or egg.
- You’ll also find delicacies without milk, but possibly with eggs. These are milk free (mælkfri in Danish) products, with everything clearly indicated on the counter.
- And they have lactose free versions (laktosefri in Danish), obviously with lactose free milk.
Oh, and one important thing: everything is super yummy, even if you’re on a normal diet. Don’t believe me, just try it and see it for yourself!
Breads, Danishes, cakes, pastries, granola – whatever you want, you’ll find it fresh, organic, homemade and gluten free at H.U.G. A personal favorite is the famous Danish pastry, the cardamom bun, which you can get here in a gluten free version.
