The Copenhagen-Malmö Train

I am deeply and honestly amazed by the engineering feats that made the train between Copenhagen and Malmö possible.

The train runs every 15–20 minutes at peak times, and it’s almost always full of passengers. Like it’s the most natural thing in the world, people crossing the sea, traveling between two EU countries and between the Danish capital and Sweden’s third-largest city, often written as Malmo in English. You can hop on in Copenhagen, and be in Malmö in about 40 minutes.

But let’s see where the Copenhagen Malmö train line runs, how to use it, and how much a ticket costs.

Where to Board

Currently, trains crossing the Øresund Bridge (the Copenhagen Malmö train) run from Østerport station in Copenhagen. You can also board the train at Nørreport, København H (Copenhagen Central), Ørestad, Tårnby, and Copenhagen Airport (CPH).

In fact, people living in and near Malmö use the Copenhagen Airport as their gate to the world, so you’ll see many of them board with suitcases at the last station in Denmark.

Crossing the Øresund Bridge

Right after CPH station, the train runs in a tunnel under the sea to appear on an artificial island, and start its climb to the height of around 57 meters (187 feet) above sea level on the central span of the bridge.

To be honest, it is a pretty exciting experience just to cross the sound between Denmark and Sweden on the Copenhagen-Malmö train, and observe the sea, the enormous cargo ships and the offshore wind turbine farm. Crossing the water, below and above, takes about 10 minutes from the total travel time.

Stops in Sweden

The Copenhagen-Malmö train has three stops in Malmö, the third one being Malmö Central, the most probable destination for most tourists.

Interestingly, Hyllie (first stop) is a very good location if you want to enjoy the noticeably friendlier Swedish prices in the large local mall “Emporia”, and Triangeln (2nd stop) is just outside the old town area of the city.

Öresundståg, the company operating these trains is basically a Swedish company. Practically, these trains continue on in Skåne County and beyond towards several destinations. Lund, Helsingborg, Kristianstad, Karlskrona, but even Halmstad, Kalmar, and Gothenburg all have direct connection with the Danish capital through this service.

Copenhagen to Malmö Train Price

Riding between Copenhagen and Malmö isn’t cheap.

Currently, a one-way train ticket between the two cities costs 161 SEK (approx. 109 DKK or 14.60 EUR). Kids under 16 get a 50% discount.

I highly recommend downloading the Danish Rejsekort app and use that (see below), not only because it’s convenient but also because it can be somewhat cheaper. The last weekend we actually visited Malmö, and 1 train ticket with the Rejsekort app cost only 91 DKK (134 SEK or 12.2 EUR), about 16% cheaper than buying a regular ticket.

But if you find this half-hour train ride expensive—and it is—compare it to crossing the Øresund Bridge one way by car for a mere 460 DKK (679 SEK or 61.60 EUR).

Train Ticket from Copenhagen to Malmö

The most important information you need to know is that there is no option to buy a ticket onboard the Copenhagen Malmö train. Make sure to have a valid ticket before boarding as inspections are frequent.

Just like for public transport in the Danish capital, you have several options to buy your ticket for the Copenhagen to Malmö train. The most important thing is to do this in advance so you avoid fines.

  • On Öresundståg’s official website (the company operating the trains).
  • In ticket machines located between the airside exit and the train station at CPH Terminal 3.
  • Recommended option: Download the Rejsekort app which you can use for transit in Copenhagen or Denmark. Conveniently, its coverage also extends to trips between Copenhagen and Malmö. “Swipe in” before boarding the train, and don’t forget to “swipe out” once you’ve arrived.
