The first time I tried one of the best burgers in Copenhagen, I wasn’t specifically looking for the best one. Honestly, I wasn’t even looking for a burger.
My brother told me he wanted to show me an awesome place in the Danish capital, so I joined him as he took me… to a gas station.
This was back when Gasoline Grill wasn’t as big of a hit as it is today. That day we visited their very first location, the one that gave them their name: an old gas station in the city center. And with just a handful of restaurants back then, they really served some fabulous burgers. Since then, they’ve grown into a chain with around ten locations, and thankfully, they’ve kept their quality. Impressively, they’ve barely been challenged for the “best burger in Copenhagen” spot on my list.
Almost…

Gasoline Grill – One of The Best Burgers in Town
If this article ended right here, I’d already have given you almost all the information you need about the best burger in Copenhagen. ortunately, only almost—because other contenders have been playing this game really well. So make sure to read on, and find out with me what really is the best burger in Copenhagen today.
But yes: Gasoline Grill has been serving one of the best burgers in the city for years. With a few caveats, though.

Let’s start with the good part. Their burgers are fantastic. They’re made fresh, the excellent patty is grilled to order. They focus on organic ingredients, you can absolutely taste that in the clean, natural flavor of their burgers. The bun is also homemade, an excellent pairing with the meat.
Gasoline Grill burgers have one of the best meat flavors I’ve ever tasted in a burger, with black pepper and salt as the only seasonings. The way a great burger should be. The meat is smoky yet soft, grilled to medium, excellent.
They take serving fresh food so seriously that they get deliveries of each ingredient every day and actually close once they’re sold out for the day.
And now let’s get to the caveats that made me wonder if there’s an even better burger in Copenhagen.
The fries at Gasoline Grill are just depressing, especially compared to the burgers. Oily, too hard on the outside, and not really soft on the inside. I know we’re not ranking fries here, but what’s a real burger experience without some excellent fries?
My other concern is that as they grew really popular, their prices started climbing pretty fast. I have a photo from 2020 with one burger costing 80 DKK. Now, as I’m writing these lines in 2026, the same burger goes for 110 DKK. First, that’s almost a 40% price increase, which I find horrendous. Second, 110 DKK for a burger when one is never enough?

I’m really not obsessed with prices, but as you’ll see, our second contender will have a hard time to pass this criteria as well.
Tommi’s Burger Joint
I tried Tommi’s Burger Joint much later, after I moved to Copenhagen and decided to seriously look for the best burger. I first read about the place in a Facebook group, where locals recommended it as one of the top contenders.
They cook the burgers over a real grill—and I mean actual flames. I don’t think many burger restaurants offer this kind of quality when it comes to preparing the meat. As a nice extra, the cheese—once added on top of the almost-ready patty—was finished with a handheld torch. Little details like this make it clear why the food at Tommi’s Burger Joint feels genuinely unique.

The result was an excellent burger. With perfectly cooked meat, a little bit of veggies, and spicy mayo, the flavors came together beautifully and reminded me why Tommi’s Burger Joint is often called one of the best burger spots in Copenhagen. And the fries here also were excellent—a huge leap from Gasoline Grill’s experience.

Is it the best burger in Copenhagen?
Unfortunately no, or at least not to my taste. I’m still missing that extra kick. It’s a very good burger, that’s undeniable. It’s worth a try, but I wouldn’t call it the best.
The meat is perfectly cooked, and the spicy mayo sauce is excellent. The little hint of veggies is the ideal amount you want in your burger. Even the bun is good—but that’s definitely more unique at Gasoline Grill. And somehow, in the end, you get a great burger—just not one you find yourself craving enough to come back for.
And here are my two concerns for Tommi’s Burger Joint:
- One is the setting: it’s like being in the 1980s. If you go for that, this is your place. But in my opinion, it just feels a bit dated today.
- I stayed hungry after eating a “burger offer”, which comprised one burger with fries and a Coke. For 150 DKK, I don’t just want to eat great food, but I want to feel that I had a complete meal.

Smash N’ Eat
My wife found this place that’s pretty much off every beaten path a tourist would normally follow. We came here on a rainy Sunday evening, far from the city center, so it had to be good to make up for the extra travel.
It was good. Very good. In fact, the truffle burger I tried at Smash N’ Eat was so good it quickly became my favorite burger in Copenhagen.

The flavor of the meat and the truffle mayo just melted together in my mouth and gave me that rare “wow” moment that you don’t even get in every great burger place.
The two patties served in the grilled brioche buns were mouthwateringly crispy near the edges, yet completely soft on the inside. A heavenly match of a perfect Maillard reaction and really good-quality meat. Add to this the velvety truffle mayo, and the whole sensation was just luscious. Plus one slice of tomato, some lettuce—the ideal quantity of veggies in a burger—and you hold the perfect smash burger in your hands.
I really mean it when I say I liked this burger even slightly more than Gasoline Grill’s burgers.
And here are two other reasons why Smash N’ Eat has definitely become my favorite burger restaurant in Copenhagen for now, beating Gasoline in every aspect:
- One combo was plenty. I didn’t stay hungry, and I didn’t have to spend a fortune on another burger to fill me up. Add to this that Smash N’ Eat is noticeably cheaper than the more trendy burger places in Copenhagen—95 DKK for the burgers, 149 DKK for the burger-fries-soda combo—and this restaurant is a clear winner. (At the end I had two burgers, but that’s an interesting story, check out my article on this burger restaurant to find out why. Still, one combo is enough.)
- The fries are perfect here. Even better than at Tommi’s, and quite a huge leap from Gasoline’s oily and hard side dish.

The Best Burger In Copenhagen
If you want a clear and short answer to where you can find the best burger in the Danish capital, here’s my take on it:
- My current favorite by far is Smash N’ Eat. If you’re up for a 15-minute train or metro ride, try this place. Keep in mind though that they serve smash burgers, not classic thicker patties.
- Gasoline Grill is selling excellent burgers. If you’re in Copenhagen, and want a great burger, I definitely recommend trying them. They have several locations, and they’re easily to reach in the city center or even at the airport.
Gasoline Grill and Tommi’s both serve more classic, thicker patties, while Smash N’ Eat does true smash burgers—thin, crispy-edged patties.
